One night in Annapolis... Donato Soviero (g) and Wade Beach (p) were scheduled to perform for Elana Byrd's jazz series at an art gallery/coffehouse/listening-room, called 49 West. A last-minute call from sound engineer Med Canby afforded the opportunity to capture the evening. This impromtu recording offers the listener an invitation to be the proverbial 'fly on the wall' for the evening's performance. Elana's music series attracts aficionados of Brazilian music and Standards, evidenced by the tune selections here. But for good measure, Theloniuous Monk and Herbie Hancock tunes were called. Donato and Wade have been making music together since 1991 in Donato's latin-jazz group, 'Decisiones', and in various ensembles since. They can frequently be heard playing together at Donato's steady duo gig at the Tabard Inn on Tuesday nights in D.C. At the intimate space of the Tabard, Wade brings an electric keyboard–which lends a very different sound and approach. Interestingly, this date at 49 West was the first occasion they played together with an acoustic piano. They adapted well, and the resulting interplay from the evening is marvelous!
